OUR WORK

Land in Action

Our projects center land care, community building, and creative expression. Together, they support hands-on learning, cultural connection, and opportunities for all generations of people to engage with land in ways that are regenerative, inclusive, and rooted in place.

Urban Agriculture

The Heron’s Nest team grows native and non-native food and medicinal plants for the Duwamish Tribe and the broader community. We also provide plant starts and seeds to community members with home gardens.

We partner with the Seattle Giving Garden Network, whose SPROUTS team grows over 5,000 vegetable starts to freely give to community growers; the produce is then donated to local food banks.

Urban Forestry

We host weekly volunteer days on the land, teaching community members about forest ecology and stewardship.  We are also the forest stewards to the adjacent greenbelt spaces, working to remove displaced plants and plant native plants in the West Duwamish Greenbelt.

Visit the Volunteer page for details on how to get involved.

Creative Resistance

Creative Resistance is an open arts gathering held twice a month in the Cedar Roundhouse Classroom. This is an opportunity for community to come and make art together, working on their own projects or joining in on a group project.

Visit the Events page for gathering dates.

Community Workshops and Events

We host free workshops throughout the year, inviting community members to learn new skills. These workshops have included mason bee and bat house building, soil testing and science, and seed germination and propagation. We also host school, church, and professional groups on the land, teaching them about the area’s ecology and land stewardship.

The Heron’s Nest also hosts free community events, including a music festival and seasonal celebrations.

Visit the Events page for details on upcoming events.
